VOC Diagnostics has developed an electronic nose that can smell blood samples to detect ovarian cancer early. If this form of cancer is detected in time, the survival rate is relatively high. However, if it is detected late, as is often the case, the survival rate is only a few percent. The vision is that the company's technology in an easy and efficient manner will be used to detect cancer earlier than is done today and thus save the lives of many patients. The technology is originally based on research from the University of Gothenburg, which has been supplemented with research expertise in sensors and electronic noses from the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology at Linköping University. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. VOCs are formed in, among other things, cancer tumors. Through advanced algorithms, specific VOCs from a tumor can be detected.
